The Dancing Marquess by Lukas Palumbo is a miniature paper theatre to cut out and make.
Lukas Palumbo and Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop bring ‘The Gaiety Theatre’ and ‘The Dancing Marquess’ back to life with this exquisitely illustrated miniature theatre in an illustrated fold out folder with the most fantastic archival images courtesy of theatre historian Viv Gardner.
‘The Gaiety Theatre’ became the playhouse for the 5th Marquess of Anglesey and his community in Plas Newydd, Wales, for a short time at the turn of the 20th century. It was here that the spectacular ‘butterfly dance’ was born.
120 years later illustrator Lukas Palumbo has dreamt up ‘the prettiest and most compact bijou (paper) theatre in existence’ for Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop in collaboration with National Trust Cymru, the current custodians of the picturesque Plas Newydd which stands on the Menai Strait in Wales overlooking Snowdonia.
Including 6 illustrated art prints making up the theatre, 2 scenes including Aladdin, 3 x 5th Marquess of Anglesey characters, and a booklet with instructions and the history of The Dancing Marquess, the text inside is in Welsh and English.
Immerse yourself in the Marquess’ fantastical world of decadent palaces, fairy-tale gardens, dressing up and the butterfly dance. The Pollock’s decorative folder includes a rare image of the whole Plas Newydd troupe including the Marquess in amazing fancy dress costumes as well as a scrapbook of the Marquess’ elaborate theatrical wardrobe.
Perfect for collectors and theatre enthusiasts, this intricate cut-and-make project offers a captivating journey into theatrical heritage. A truly unique piece that transforms paper into performance.
Advice on age and difficulty level: We recommend this model for older children and adults as it requires intricate cutting with a craft knife, however it is relatively simple to make and can easily be constructed as an afternoon project giving a sophisticated paper model.
